Hospice seeking supporters to trek Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China

The hospice is getting ready to embark on an overseas challenge and is looking for a team of supporters to join them.

In October next year, Winchester Hospice will trek the Great Wall of China to raise funds to support the hospice care of local people. The charity is now looking to form a team of at least ten like minded people who are willing to put the steps in while raising funds through sponsorship.

This is the second trek to be organised by the charity after a team of 22 ventured to the Sahara Desert in 2024 and raised £76,000. After they returned Dave Morris, who took part, said: “The Sahara trip was simply one of those stunning, amazing, once in a lifetime things to have done. But the fact it was for the hospice and with an amazing team of people sharing that together made it all the more special. The spirit of us trekking as a team and supporting each other mirrored the ethos of the hospice itself in a beautiful way.”

Now the charity has set its sights on its next adventure, taking place from 16 to 25 October 2027, and will take supporters to a remote, little-visited section of the Great Wall of China where they’ll trek along the wall itself, meticulously built and restored over thousands of years. The challenge will take them through wild and remote landscapes with distant views of green rolling hills and mountain peaks with this stunning wonder of the world as their backdrop.

Our Sahara trek team

Staying in guesthouses throughout the trip will allow trekkers to gain an understanding of authentic Chinese culture as they sample some incredible local cuisine and discover more about the lifestyle of local people.

Jo Westerman, fundraising manager for Winchester Hospice took part in the Sahara trek and will be joining supporters on the Great Wall of China challenge. She said: “An experience like this really is an amazing opportunity. While you’ll be doing something incredible to support our patients, you’ll also be creating memories and forming friendships that will last a lifetime.”
