Hampshire Hospitals palliative care service

We have dedicated specialist palliative care teams operating at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, Countess of Brecknock Hospice in Andover and the Mid and North Hampshire community.

The Hampshire Hospitals palliative care teams can be involved at any stage in an illness when symptoms are complex but regular support is offered when needs are changing quickly and towards the end of life. Bereavement support is offered for families involved in this care.

Together, we provide symptom control and psychological support for complex problems and support health care professionals delivering palliative care through education and training.

This service involves:

  • Complex symptom management

  • Psychological care for patients and families

  • Professional advice and support

  • Ethical decision making

  • Community liaison and support

  • Any progressive, life-threatening disease

We know that improving physical symptoms such as pain and helping to address anxiety or low mood related to illness can make a huge difference to patients and their families. In many illnesses the stresses of adjusting and the emotions that are triggered can cause distress, the team aim to support you through this time. We aim to work with patients by listening to what is important to them, taking their goals and views into account. We recognise that this type of personal care is valued, and we want our service to respond to what patients regard as important.

By offering individually tailored care, patients have access to a team of staff all trained in specialist palliative care.
