Inpatient unit

At Winchester Hospice, we have beds that enable us to care for up to 10 inpatients.

Our inpatient unit offers a number of services to patients needing our support, including:

-          Care at the end of life

-          Symptom control of difficult symptoms like pain, nausea or vomiting

-          Rehabilitation after some treatments e.g. radiotherapy

-          Psychological support

People are usually admitted to the inpatient unit for an average of 7-10 days, if a patient’s condition is stabilised, then discharge will be arranged in consultation with the patient and others important to them. Appropriate follow up by hospice services or other teams working with the hospice will be arranged by hospice staff.

What is our inpatient unit like?

Inpatient rooms

The inpatient unit has 10 ensuite bedrooms, each with a ‘Cuddle Bed’ – the ‘gold standard’ in acute care beds and the only hospital bed commissioned to sleep two people.  At the touch of a button, the bed can be extended to accommodate a partner, family member or for those that prefer a double bed.  We are one of only two hospices in the UK which has all its bedrooms equipped with these beds. Each room has a multi-position chair for patients and a z bed for relatives to stay overnight with their loved one.

Our family room

Our hospice also has a family room, which provides a quiet space for patients and their families/carers to have private moments. Here, there’s a full equipped kitchen, table and chairs and sofa area to ensure families can feel both comfortable and relaxed.

Our garden room

Families can also enjoy moments together in our garden room which is set within our beautiful outdoor garden space. We play an important role in supporting carers, who dedicate their lives to comforting their terminally-ill loved ones. We offer support for families and friends when patients are in our hospice and, at the time of bereavement. The use of a family room at the hospice and overnight accommodation can relieve some of the strain of visiting patients in the final stages of their illness.

The family room at Winchester Hospice

To all at Winchester Hospice. I want to thank you all for everything you did for my mum and our family. You all go about and beyond for the families in your care, and we couldn’t have got through losing mum without all the love and support you give. We can not thank you all enough. There just isn’t the words. Thank you again.
