Winchester lights up to remember loved ones
A celebration has been held this evening to remember loved ones who will not be here this Christmas.
Over 150 people gathered at Christ Church in the city for Winchester Hospice’s annual Light up a Life service which offers local people a space to remember their loved ones as the festive season approaches.
The event, supported by local estate agents Nony Kerr-Smiley and Martin & Co., included a mix of carols, readings and live performances from Winchester A Cappella.
Donna Coombs, matron at Winchester Hospice said; “We know this time of year can be especially hard for people who are missing someone they love and we’re delighted to bring our community this special event where they can be given the space to remember and reflect.
“Loved ones may be gone but we know they’re never forgotten and it’s lovely to see the room filled with so much love as we come together at this time of year, a time we know holds such special meaning to so many.”
Each guest was presented with a tree decoration, hand made by hospice staff, to take home and cherish.
The event has so far raised almost £10,000 to support the care delivered by the hospice, with donations still coming in following the service.
Winchester Hospice opened in 2021 and has cared for over 3,000 local people in that time, both at the hospice and in their own homes. Since they opened their doors, they’ve never closed, even on Christmas Day, and this year, the dedicated team will once again be caring for local people over the festive period.
While part of the NHS, the hospice also relies on charitable giving to support patient care. If you’d like to donate, you can do so via the button below.
