Charity takes on Great Wall of China challenge
After the success of last year’s trek through the Sahara Desert, a local charity has announced their latest fundraising overseas challenge. And this time, they’re heading to Asia!
Winchester Hospice will be taking on the Great Wall of China is their latest fundraising adventure and they’re now looking for people to join them.
Jo Westerman, fundraising officer for the hospice, said; “As one of the wonders of the world, The Great Wall of China features on the bucket list of so many people. This trek offers you the opportunity to explore a little visited part of it, guided by travel experts who help you immerse yourself in the culture of local communities. Our overseas adventures are designed to challenge you but they are, with a little training, achievable and you’ll be joined by a group of like-minded people which makes this trip perfect for small groups or those who want to try something on their own, all while supporting the care delivered by the hospice.”
The team will depart from Winchester on Saturday 7 November 2026 and head to Beijing where their trek of one of the wonders of the world will begin. Participants will be away for a week, returning on Sunday 15 November 2026.
During the trip, your exploration of the wall will take you through wild and remote landscapes with distant views of green rolling hills and mountain peaks. You’ll stay in guesthouses throughout the trip which will allow you to gain an understanding of authentic Chinese culture as you sample some incredible local cuisine and discover more about the lifestyle of local people.
The trek is being organised by Winchester Hospice’s travel partner The Different Travel Company which has extensive experience in this type of overseas adventure. Ally Pinney, from the company, said; ““We are looking forward to taking supporters of Winchester Hospice and immersing them in the beauty that will unfold before them as they explore sections of the Great Wall of China. The team at Different Travel will take care of all the logistics ensuring the team has a trip of a lifetime whilst raising funds for such an important cause.”
For those interested in taking part and wanting to know more, the charity is hosting an information evening on Monday 17 March at 7.15pm at Christ Church in Winchester. Everyone with an interest in joining the team is welcome at the event where Different Travel will talk through what to expected from the trek. The hospice’s fundraising team will also be on hand to give hints and tips that will help you reach your fundraising goal.
