It’s been a record-breaking year for one local charity as their annual walk around the city sold out for the first time.

Winchester Hospice’s Purple Night Walk has become a staple in the local diary, as charity supporters gather together, dressed head to toe in purple, to support the care delivered by the team based in Romsey Road.

And this year, just over 300 people took to the streets of Winchester to walk the 7km route to help fund the care of local people, the most to ever complete the walk.

Steph Walker, fundraising assistant at the charity said: “Each year our Purple Night Walk grows in support and, as we reach the fifth anniversary of Winchester Hospice, it’s great to see this event sell out for the first time.

“With 300 people all gathered together in support of the hospice, the atmosphere was incredible. I want to thank everyone who came along and has helped raise funds to help care for our patients.”

There was a poignant moment of reflection just before the walk began where those walking in memory of loved ones were able to take a moment to remember them. The walk was then officially started by the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Jamie Scott, who has chosen the hospice as one of his nominated charities.

As walkers made their way along the route, they were treated to some new features introduced by the charity this year which included live music and light installations around the 7km course. As they crossed the finish line, everyone was awarded a medal to celebrate their fundraising efforts.

Nony Kerr-Smiley, who sponsored the event, said: “It’s an absolute honour to support Winchester Hospice’s Purple Night Walk. The event combines the opportunity to remember those we love while also having a bit of fun to support a charity that does so much to care for local people. I love seeing the outfits people put together before they head off to cover Winchester in a sea of purple to spread the word of the work of the hospice. And I’m pleased we’re able to play our part in making sure patients get the very best care.”

The Purple Night Walk has already raised over £36,000 for the charity, with further donations through sponsorship still coming in.
