My Experience at Winchester Hospice Fundraising Charity

For the last year, we’ve been proud to support a University of Winchester student as they gain valuable real life experience of working for a charity. Here, Adam Richardson shares what he’s learned in his time with us.

In May, I applied for several work placements to gain experience alongside my marketing degree. The fundraising role at Winchester Hospice stood out because it aligned closely with my studies, so I submitted my CV and cover letter.

I was invited to an informal meeting in the Hospice’s Psalm 23 garden, where I met Jo Westerman, the Fundraising Manager. The warm atmosphere and friendly staff made a strong impression, and I explained my interest in gaining real marketing experience.

During my part‑time placement, I worked on both research and creative tasks. I looked into the hospice’s work, its competitors, and fundraising approaches used by similar charities. Creatively, I developed concept social media posts using Canva and helped film volunteer stories.

This placement gave me valuable insight into how a hospice communicates, fundraises, and plans events. It also strengthened my practical marketing skills. I’m grateful to the team for the opportunity.

I hope to stay connected with Winchester Hospice after completing my final year at university and plan to support their Purple Night Walk on Saturday 20 September to continue building experience for my CV and portfolio.
